Mysore Sand Museum 01 - Elephant

The museum was established in 2014. It will be a great delight to see the wonderful carvings of sculptures on the sand. The creativity is on a very high level. Most of the theme designs are different and this is a place worth spending time with family and friends.

Mysore Sand Museum has around 150 sculptures made up of sand in 16 unique themes. The whole museum covers an area of about 13500 sq. feet. Around 115 truckloads of sand have been used to make these sculptures. Most of the themes present in the museum are unique like Mysore heritage, wildlife, culture, and religious epics. These sculptures also depict fairy tales and moral stories.

When you arrive at the entrance of the museum, you will notice a beautiful statue of Lord Ganesha. It is about 15 feet in height. We have many notable sand sculptures of Goddess Chamundeshwari,
Mysore King Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, Lord Krishna, and Arjuna on a horse-drawn chariot, ancient Egypt, zodiac wheel, instances from Arabian nights, Laughing Buddha, Christmas tree, and Santa Claus, Disneyland, Tom & Jerry cartoon, etc. You can enjoy a great time with your family and friends. Especially its a must-visit place for children.
 

Sand Carvings in the Museum :

Mysore Sand Museum 02 - Chariot

More than 120 truckloads of sand have been used to make the sculptures in the Mysore sand museum. These sculptures are made using mainly sand, water, and a very low quantity of glue. This is the main reason for the attraction of tourists. These sculptures are protected from sunlight and rain. This increases the life of the sand sculptures. We can expect these sculptures to last for about one year. The sculptures are also prevented from dangerous flies, rodents, and insects using insecticides and pesticides.

During the time of winter and rainy seasons, the sand sculptures become moist and there are many chances of getting collapsed.
These sand sculptures must also be avoided with ants that dig holes inside the sculptures.
 
MN Gowri is the sculptor behind the Mysore sand museum. She is one of the famous sand artists across India. It took a great effort of hard work and commitment for her to build this museum. The main challenge is the maintenance of the sand sculptures in the museum. She has also designed sculptures on themes like Save the Girl Child, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Dashavatara of Vishnu, and so on.

Mysore Sand Museum 03 - Wodeyar

The museum is located near the foothills of chamundi temple in Sapthamathrukha Layout in KC Layout. The museum will be open on all days of the week. It is open from the morning at 8:30 AM to the evening till 6:30 PM. The entry fee for the adults at the Mysore Sand Museum is Rs 40. They charge Rs 20 for children. People can spend around 1-2 hours seeing the complete museum. It is worth spending the time in the museum.

The museum is around 5.5 km from the Mysore railway station. It will take around 15mins to reach the museum from the railway station. The museum is around 4 km from the Mysore Suburban KSRTC Bus stand. It will take around 10mins to reach the museum from the Bus stand. People can also take city buses or auto-rickshaw to get to the museum. Some city buses pass via the museum route to chamundi hills. This place is very convinent to visit as it is present within the city limits.
