Nanjangud Temple
The Nanjundeshwara or Nanjangud Temple is an ancient temple in the Hindu pilgrimage town of Nanjanagudu in the Karnataka state, India towards the South. It is known for the ancient temple of the Lord or highness Nanjundeshwara. The Nanjundeshwara temple is located inside the town on the bank of river Kapila or Kabini, a tributary of the river Kaveri.
This temple is one of the biggest temples in the state of Karnataka. The name of the town is derived from the lord Nanjundeshwara Swami. The other name of God is also the lord Shiva. The place is sacred and holy as there is a Sangama, where the two rivers meet i.e., Gundlu and the Kapila.
An important fact to be aware of Nanjangud Temple is, that this place is also considered the “Dakshina Kashi” or the “Southern Kashi” located 23 KM away from Mysore and around 162 KM away from Bangalore.
Little History
With respect to Hindu mythology, while searching for the nectar of immortality the Gods | Lords, and demons churned the ocean. During the churning, the poison was the first to come out of the ocean.
Lord Shiva came to save the situation by drinking this poison, to prevent the poison from spreading across the universe. Later Shiva’s wife Parvathi held his throat tightly and closed it to prevent the poison from spreading to the rest of his body and killing him.
Narada then held his mouth so that he did not vomit the poison out. The poison was then stuck in his throat, making it turn blue color. And hence Lord Shiva is also knowingly called the great Neelakantha, or “the blue-throated one”.
Nanjanagud exactly or literally means the place where Nanjundeshwara or Neelakantha stays. He the Lord is also described as one who cures diseases of his praises.
Temple Description
This Nanjangud Temple is the biggest temple in Karnataka with a total area of 50K square feet. The Entrance tomb consists of 7 stories which are addressed as the Mahadwara. Not only that, the tomb is decorated with 7 golden plated Kalasas which gives even more an astonishing view to our eyes. Now followed by two horns at the top.
The temple consists of around 122 images, which is one of the highest to be worshipped inside a temple. The main idol is at the centre and its one of the best to view. The temple walls also has representation of the lord Ganesha in 32 forms, which is a must watch to our eyesight’s.
The Muslim ruler or the Tiger of Mysore – Tipu Sultan had strong faith in God Nanjundeshwara. He addressed him as ‘Hakim Nanjundeshwara’. He had a favorite elephant whose eye ailment was cured by the holy water (theertha) from this temple. He has donated in the form of respect to God a Lingam made of jade along with an emerald necklace to the temple.
There is a river flowing very close to temple, Kapila or Kabini. It’s a Sangam of two rivers i.e., Gundlu and Kabini. It is believed that the water from here is as sacred as the Nanjangud temple itself. The visit to the temple can be said as incomplete without the visit to this river.
Rathotsava Chariot Procession
The Srikanteshwara Swami is a Home God for so many families in the state of Karnataka. It is believed that the visit to this place before any good functions or programs in life, is said to be succeeded with the blessings of Lord Shiva.
This Rathotsava is an annual event of Nanjangud temple. People from all over Karnataka and other states tend to visit the temple during this time of the year. Thousands and people in one single place with a lot of humidity and with a peak of devotion can be witnessed on the visit here.
There is a total of 5 chariots that will be pulled during the Rathotsava. They are collectively known as
- Ganapathy Ratha
- Chandikeshwara Ratha
- Gautama Ratha
- Subramanya Ratha
- Parvathi Ratha
Note: The Gautama Ratha has the same or equal height as the temple and is considered to be 90 feet high.

- Skandha (Subramanya) Shashti, the idol of Lord Subramanya pulled by devotees during Shashti.
- Girija kalyana, Celebrated during “Ashadamasa”
- Lakshadeepotsava, Celebrated during “Kartheekamasa”

How to Reach Nanjangud Temple
The temple is located around 23 Km away from Mysore. If you are a person who is traveling via bus or train, you will have to get down at the Mysore Suburban Bus stand and then board a bus to Nanjangud.
The travel duration is around 40 minutes.

Nanjangud Temple does not collect and fees for entrance and is free of cost.
