Jaganmohana Palace
Jaganmohana Palace in the city of Mysore, India. It was completed in 1861 and initially used by the Wodeyar, kings of Mysore as their home (when the present Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas Palace) was under construction after the previous palace burned down).
It is now used as an art gallery and Built in 1861 by Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, in the traditional Hindu architectural style. The most striking feature of this palace is the intricate carvings that adorn the entire structure.a function hall.
Jaganmohana Palace Mysore History
Jaganmohana Palace was constructed in the year 1861 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III as a facultative place for the Wodeyar family. When the Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas) got burnt down – the royal family stayed in this palace till its completion ( the Mysore Palace – Amba Vilas).
The palace has authenticated many important events like the inauguration of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV in the year 1902. Lord Curzon who was the Viceroy and Governor-General of India during that period attended the ceremony.
The first period of the legislative council of Mysore was conducted in the year 1907 and the convocation of Mysore University was held in this palace and many cultural programs are conducted in this Jaganmohana palace.
In the year 1915, the Jaganmohana Palace was averted into an art and painting gallery. It was renamed Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar art gallery. Mysore University used to host its convocations in early 1900.
The pavilion was used, as the venue for the Representative Assembly. After 1923, a democratic institution consisting of the people’s representative to deliberate on the affairs of the state, this representative assembly was the first of its kind in a princely state, an arrangement made by the Mysore Maharajas.
Initially, the convocation ceremonies of the Mysore University were held in this attractive hall. The hall was also used as an auditorium for staging plays and other cultural activities for the members of the royal family. Many important meetings and sessions were held in this hall till alternative venues came up in the city.
Architecture or Construction of Jaganmohana Palace
The construction of the Jaganmohana palace is absolutely fascinating. This palace is a three legendary mansion built in Hindu custom of architecture. The palace was further protracted in the year 1900 and an additional front area was built and added to the existing palace.
The wonderful carvings on the doors are truly mesmerizing. The main door has labyrinthine carvings on the two sides of the doors.
The two sides of the door have the carvings of the Dashavatara (the ten primary avatars of Vishnu, a principal Hindu god Vishnu). The palace has three main avenues. The carvings of religious importance and miniature temples relating to Hindu God will mesmerize the tourist.
These carvings are known as entailed (is a wonderful structure made up of wood, stone, and bands that lie horizontally above the column. They are the main elements of classical architecture). The interior walls of the palace have murali paintings.
These paintings are directly applied to the wall and ceilings of Jaganmohana palaces. Only vegetable sources are used for the paintings and it is one of the most extraordinary paintings in the world. The family tree of the Wodeyars is also artwork on one of the walls.
Art Gallery in Jaganmohana Palace
Jaganmohana Palace was transformed into an art gallery in the year 1915 but it was named Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar artwork gallery in the year 1955. It is one of the biggest art galleries in South India and has some wonderful paintings of Raja Ravi Varma. He was a granulate painter and artist from Kerala. His paintings and artwork have received great whishing from all over the world.
The arts and paintings in the art gallery are beyond price and show the beauty of Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings. The gallery comprises around 2000 paintings. Some of the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma illustrate the truth of life. The paintings covey different Indian customs paintings like those of Mysore, Shantiniketan, and Mughal.
So many exhibits include weapons of war, musical instruments, brassware, sculptures, antique coins, and currencies. And another unique artwork exhibited here is a French clock which has a mechanism in which a parade of miniature soldiers is displayed every hour; beating drums mark the seconds and a bugle marks the minute.
Paintings or artwork made on a grain of rice that can be viewed only through a magnifier are also displayed here.

Auditorium at Jaganmohan Palace
Jaganmohan Palace has a big auditorium which is used for many cultural activities like dance, music concerts, and dramas even to this day during Dasara Festival this palace looks mesmerizing.
The palace gets decked up during the Dasara festival. The auditorium has designs with complicated carvings that make it all the more beautiful.
Activities Inside Jaganmohan Palace
The Jaganmohana Palace has been a shining gem in Mysore’s crown and the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery is considered to be amongst the best art galleries in the world. Art enthusiasts from across the globe are in awe of the grandeur and finesse of the gallery.
In 2018, Jaganmohana Palace hosted a unique show, ‘Jaganmohanam’ – The doll festival. The festival lasted for a month (10 October 2018 to 10 November 2018), and visitors witnessed one lakh dolls collected and brought in from all over India.
There are dolls of various shapes, and sizes and made of different materials like wood, glass, metal, bamboo, ceramics, paper mache, etc. A truly spectacular event that captured the intrigue of each and every visitor.

One of the most exquisite and largest palaces in India is Mysore Palace, also known as Amba Vilas Palace. It was the official seat of the Wodeyar Dynasty, which ruled Mysore from 1399 to 1950, and is now located in the southern state of Karnataka.
The Jaganmohana Palace, located in the royal city of Mysore, is a magnificent structure with a long and fascinating history. The Wodeyars of Mysore utilized it when their primary residence, Amba Vilas Palace, was being renovated following a fire.
It is one of the city’s seven palaces and is considered one of the most beautiful contributions made by the city’s Wodeyar Kings during their rule.
