The Government Sandalwood Oil Factory was establishedin 1916 by the Mysore King Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Diwan Sri. M. Visvesvaraya. Sandalwood is a flower bearing trees, whose scented wood is used to extract the sandalwood oil and make several articles. The perfumed wood is also sold in its sole form for which it has immense demand.  The Sandalwood oil is used to make many articles which have the sandalwood essence. The Incense Sticks, Doop, Soaps, Perfume, and many articles have an intense value to it because of the aroma it emits when in use.

The pilot experiment conducted for the extraction of sandalwood oil was done at the Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru), under the expertise of Professor Suddourough and Professor Watson. Currently, sandalwood oil is used at this mega factory to make toilet soaps, cosmetics, incense sticks, talcum powder, cologne powder and baby powder. The first sandal soap manufactured in Mysore was introduced under the brand name ‘Mysore Sandal Soap’ in the year 1918 which instantly became a super-hit. Once the Mysore Sandal Soap was invented, there was no turning back for the factory. Since it was run by the State Government, the soaps were kept at a minimal cost which made the sales skyrocket. Everyone wanted to use the Mysore Sandal soap and then the factory sales were really booming.
