The main purpose of the construction of the dam is to store water for drinking and agricultural purposes. In the past, Mysore and Mandya regions were extremely dry during summers and faced many water scarcity issues during the summer season. In the year 1875, about one-fifth of the population of Mysore was wiped out due to a severe drought. Many crops failed as a result of the shortage of water and irrigation problems. Farmers from both the regions rely more on Cauvery water for agriculture and household purposes. To overcome this problem, the plan to construct the dam came into existence.

M. Visvesvaraya was the chief engineer in the construction of this amazing dam. Popularly known as Sir. M.V is the main person responsible for planning and execution of the dam project. He faced much opposition during the initial days when proposed the plan. Later he approached the Maharaja Krishna Raja Wodeyar and other ministers and got approval. But the initial plan was to build about 194 feet in height which was dropped.

Instead of using cement, a special mortar named Surki was used for construction purposes. The dam was finally completed in the year 1931. After the construction, about 5,000 to 10,000 people lost their homes due to land acquired by the dam area. These people were provided with new agricultural lands and places to build new homes.
