Top Gun 3 may be here sooner than we expected.

Glen Powell, 35, gave a brief Top Gun 3 update during a live interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast alongside his Twisters co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, 26. When the two were asked which project would come first, a Normal People continuation with Edgar-Jones or Top Gun 3 with Powell, he answered the latter.

“I mean, I have a date,” Powell told podcast host Josh Horowitz, seemingly confirming that a start date has been set for him to begin work on Top Gun 3.

Powell played Jake “Hangman” Seresin in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. When asked if there was any more news that Powell would like to share about the third movie, the Anyone But You actor was quick to declare “absolutely not” while shaking his head.

There was an additional, but unsuccessful, attempt to press Powell about any secrets surrounding Top Gun 3. After being asked, “Do you know things you can’t say?” Powell replied, “Uh, Josh, we should go to the next question.”

While details about the film are being kept mum, news that Paramount was in the process of developing a third Top Gun film with Powell, Tom Cruise and Miles Teller first began circulating back in January. In April, Jennifer Connelly revealed to ET that she was also on board to return to the franchise.

“I’ll be there. I’m ready,” she said, before noting of Top Gun: Maverick, “We had such a great time shooting it. It was fun.”

While she was ready to reunite with her Top Gun co-stars, Connelly noted at the time that she hadn’t seen a script for the third film just yet.

“I haven’t seen anything,” she said. “I had a casual chat with my friend, Joe Kosinski, who directed it, who I worked with twice now. I’m his biggest fan. I think he’s so great. [I talked to him] about the possibility of it, but I don’t know anything concrete.”

A sequel to the 1986 classic, Top Gun: Maverick soared into theaters in May 2022, grossing $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office to become the 11th highest grossing movie of all time that summer. Top Gun: Maverick currently ranks as the 12th biggest film. It was also nominated for six Academy Awards, taking home the award for Best Sound.

This season has been widely dubbed “the summer of Glen Powell,” as he’s been the star of this year’s Hit Man and Twisters following the box-office smash success of 2023’s Anyone But You. While Powell’s biggest encouragement comes from his parents and puppy, fans would surely support the rising star’s return to Hangman and another shirtless beach football match.
